August 18th

I’m really slacking on this whole journal thing! Right now I have a really dirty kitten crawling all over me. Probably shouldn’t let it do it but the thing is so pitiful and really just wants some love. Today hasn’t been going all that terribly great. Recently 6 Njala University students came to research camp (it was quite the surprise to me when they showed up!). All are young men and therefore I am sleeping in the village at the moment. I guess I’m just a wuss but I feel weird staying there with 6 men I don’t really know. Anyways today I went to camp to find that they had mixed my pump water with rain water (the water that drains off the roof and consequently probably has bird poop, monkey pee and all sorts of stuff in it). No thanks. They’d also emptied my rain gauge so I couldn’t see how much it rained yesterday. Boo. So I had then hired men to dig my pit traps for the pygmy hippos, and they ended up not completing the work because it was “too cold.” Then somebody tried to take my rainjacket with them which was not cool. I dunno I just feel like I need a margarita!!

Other than the lil logistical crap – It really takes FOREVER to get anything done here – it is going well. We’ve got most of the cameras up and I’m just crossing my fingers that the humidity doesn’t screw everything up.
